Brest is the capital of Brest Oblast, located in the southwest of Belarus. The city covers an area of 146 square kilometers and has a population of about 340,000. Once a major overland checkpoint city in the former Soviet Union, it is now an important city connecting the European Union and the Commonwealth of Independent States, and is the largest manufacturing center, cultural center and transportation hub in southwestern Belarus.
