Betong, known as the Town in the Mist, is located in southern Thailand and is an important town on the border with Malaysia. It is 1,328 square kilometers in size and has a population of around 50,000, 40% of whom are of Chinese descent. Chinese culture is very prominent in Betong; the town has the largest Chinese primary schools across Thailand. There are also the Confucius Institute of Betong Municipality and the Chinese Department of Yala Rajabhat University.
