Rivera, the capital city of Rivera Province and the most important border city in the north of Uruguay. Founded on March 21, 1860, it is the sixth largest city in Uruguay, with a population of 64,465. Livestock, agriculture and forestry are the main industry of the city, and the suburbs are a distribution center for agricultural and livestock products and an industrial center. The city is connected by rail and road to the capital city of Montevideo and the towns of southern Brazil, and has a flourishing transit trade.
