Maribor is Slovenia’s second largest city and the economic, administrative, education and cultural center of north-eastern part of the country. It covers an area of 148 square kilometers with a population of 115,000. Referred to as “the city of wine”, Maribor is famous for grape growing and wine culture. Heavy industry once dominated the economy in the 20th century, and now it has been transformed to a stage with service industry as the mainstay, while retail commerce, bank finance and medical industry as pillar industries.
