Located on the right bank of the lower Volga River, Saratov is the capital of Saratov Oblast of Russia. It is an important railway hub, river port and economic, cultural and educational center in the Volga River Basin. It has an area of about 2,100 square kilometers and a population of about 900,000. The city is rich in culture, with more than a dozen institutions of higher learning and many high-end scientific research institutions located here.
