Sao Luis, founded on September 8, 1612, is the capital of the state of Maranhao. It has a population at 1 million, making Sao Luís the most populous county in the state, the 15th most populous municipality in Brazil. The economy of Sao Luís is grounded in the secondary and tertiary sectors. UNESCO granted the city of Sao Luís the title of World Cultural Heritage.
