Phnom Penh is the capital city of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the largest city in Cambodia, situated in central plains of the country at the confluence of the Mekong River, the Tonle Sap River, and the Bassac River. It covers an area of 289 km² with a population of approximately 1.3 million. Since 1434, it has been the capital of Cambodia, serving as the political, economic, and cultural center of the nation. It is also a major hub for domestic and international air and water transportation.
