Work Permit Application

In order to work in China, all foreign nationals shall obtain work permits as per regulations. Work permit-related procedures involve the employer’s registration, the Notice on the Grant of Foreigner's Work Permit, as well as the extension, cancelation, change and replacement of Foreigner's Work Permit. Procedures of applying for Foreigner's Work Permit are detailed below:

(1) The employer of foreign nationals shall register accounts in the Service System for Foreigners Working in China (http://fwp.safea.gov.cn/).

(2) After the account is approved, application for the work permit shall be submitted online. The employer shall independently print the Notice on the Grant of Foreigner’s Work Permit in the Service System for Foreigners Working in China after the system shows that the application is approved.

(3) Foreign nationals shall present the Notice on the Grant of Foreigner’s Work Permit and other required documents to the embassy or consulate of the People's Republic of China in foreign countries to apply for the Z visa, F visa or R visa.

(4) Within 15 days after foreign nationals arrive in China with valid visas, the employer shall apply for the Foreigner's Work Permit online. Upon examination and approval, the employer may use a courier service to deliver the work permit to its address, or collect the work permit at the special service window for foreigners of Wuhan Science and Technology Bureau at Wuhan Municipal Civil Service Center by presenting the service acceptance form.

(5) Foreign nationals shall apply for work-type residence certificate at the Entry and Exit Administration Department of Wuhan Public Security Bureau within 30 days after arrive in China with valid visas.

(6) If the employment relationship between the employer and foreign nationals is expected to be continued after the expiry of Foreigner’s Work Permit, the work permit shall be extended at least three months before the date of expiry upon mutual agreement. If the labor contract (employment relationship) between foreign nationals and the employer needs to be terminated in advance, the employer shall apply for the cancelation of the Foreigner's Work Permit. In case of any change of information of foreign nationals in relation to their employment in China (e.g. name, travel document number, title, type of work), the employer shall apply for the change of entries on the Foreigner’s Work Permit. In case of loss of Foreigner’s Work Permit, the employer shall present related supporting documents to apply for replacement of the work permit.

(7) To obtain the work permit, the following documents shall be provided:

1. Application form for Foreigner’s Work Permit;

2. Employment contract or certificate of employment (Chinese contract agreement, letter of appointment, dispatch letter);

3. Certificates of final academic degree (highest academic qualification) and professional qualification received;

4. Proof of work experience;

5. Police clearance certificate;

6. Certificate of medical examination of the applicant;

7. The applicant's passport, visa or international travel document;

8. Related supporting documents of accompanying family members.
