Maribor is the country's second largest city and the economic, administrative, education and cultural center in east Slovenia. It covers an area of 148 square kilometers with a population of 115 thousand. Reputed as “the city of wine”, Maribor is famous for grape planting and wine culture. Heavy industry once dominated the economy in the 20th century, and now it has been transformed to a stage with service industry as the mainstay, while retail, bank finance and medical industry as pillar industries.
